BepiColombo Mission Arrives at Mercury

The BepiColombo mission, launched in October 2018, is set to arrive at Mercury, the innermost planet of our solar system. The journey has been long and complex, but the spacecraft is now approaching its destination.

Key Milestones:

  • Separation of Science Orbiters: The two science orbiters—one operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the other by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)—will detach from their power module on September 3 at around 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT).   • Signal Acquisition: After separation, ESA will pause the webcast briefly and then resume to cover the acquisition of signals from the orbiters, expected to start no earlier than 9:53 a.m. EDT (1353 GMT).

Arrival Timeline

  • The MPO will eventually reach its final orbit on March 10, 2027, with a scientific phase beginning on April 6.
  • The MMO will be released into its own elliptical orbit around Mercury on December 9 or 10.

Science Objectives

During its mission, BepiColombo aims to:

  • Create a complete map of Mercury at various wavelengths.
  • Analyze the planet’s mineralogy and elemental composition.
  • Investigate Mercury’s internal structure to determine if it is molten.
  • Study the planet’s magnetic field and its origins.

This mission will provide unprecedented insights into Mercury, often considered “the least explored planet in the inner solar system.”
