Rabies Vaccination Program Overview
What is Rabies?
Rabies is a highly fatal viral disease primarily transmitted through the bites or scratches of infected animals. It can also spread when the saliva of an infected animal contacts a person’s or another animal’s mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth) or open wounds. Due to its transmission potential, rabies is a significant public health concern.
Local Response
Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly emphasized the seriousness of rabies, especially given the rising number of positive tests among local wildlife. To mitigate this threat, the health department has initiated a vaccination program aimed at protecting both people and pets. The goal is to reduce the incidence of rabies in wild animals.
Vaccination for Pets
While pets can receive a rabies vaccination to protect them, those who are exposed to rabies must undergo a costly series of post-exposure shots.
Bait Safety Guidelines
If you come into contact with rabies bait:
- Call the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300.
- If your pet finds the bait, dispose of it in the trash using rubber gloves or a plastic bag.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the bait.
- Report any contact with the vaccine liquid to the health department.
