On September 2, JGC Holdings announced that its operating company, JGC Corp, was selected in August to conduct a feasibility study for a new space chamber system as part of a competitive bidding initiative by JAXA. This study aims to define equipment specifications, building requirements, and assess the economic feasibility of creating a facility centered around a large vacuum vessel.

Importance of Thermal Vacuum Testing

Thermal vacuum chambers simulate the conditions of space on Earth, allowing for critical performance verification of spacecraft such as satellites and space telescopes before their launch. With a rise in spacecraft development both domestically and internationally, the need for such facilities is becoming increasingly important.

Current Facilities

Japan’s existing large-scale thermal vacuum facilities are few, with JAXA’s Tsukuba Space Center housing one of the largest and longest-operating chambers. The creation of a next-generation chamber could play a vital role in the future of Japan’s domestic spacecraft programs.

JGC’s Expertise

JGC plans to leverage its experience in engineering, procurement, and construction from past projects, including large facilities handling cryogenic fluids, which are relevant to thermal vacuum testing. The company has successfully completed over 20,000 projects across 80 countries, focusing on optimizing functionality, quality, schedule, and costs.

Future Applications

Insights gained from this feasibility study may inform potential engineering and construction projects if the initiative progresses to implementation. Additionally, JGC has been involved in other JAXA projects, such as those related to lunar propellant production plants.
