Pastor Greg Laurie has emphasized that to influence America’s culture, the church must first address its own spiritual health. Speaking at a recent TPUSA Faith gathering, he referenced the Book of Jonah to illustrate two critical practices often overlooked by the church: prayer and preaching the gospel.
Laurie pointed out that, like Jonah, who had to confront his own reluctance before bringing God’s message to Nineveh, the church needs revival and renewal to effect change. He stressed that lasting transformation in society cannot come from political victories alone, but rather through sharing the gospel, which he described as the only true means to change hearts.
Amidst America’s cultural and spiritual challenges, he challenged pastors to present an unwatered-down gospel to younger generations, emphasizing that every generation requires the gospel’s truth. Laurie encouraged churches to integrate evangelism into their core identity, urging believers to invite others to know Jesus and to create consistent opportunities for people to respond to the gospel.
He bluntly stated the choice facing churches: “We can evangelize or we can fossilize.” Ultimately, Laurie argued for a spiritual awakening within the church as the necessary precursor to cultural transformation, asserting that bold witnessing for Jesus Christ must begin within God’s house.
