Waymo has initiated its fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Denver, San Diego, and Tampa, expanding its reach to a total of 14 U.S. cities. Pre-registration has garnered interest from tens of thousands of residents in these locations, with the service gradually expanding to more users as it transitions toward an open model.
The launches come after extensive local validation testing, with the Waymo Driver reportedly involved in 94% fewer serious injury crashes compared to human drivers in similar conditions. Prior to the launches, Waymo coordinated efforts with local officials, first responders, and community groups to ensure a smooth introduction.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis emphasized the launch’s alignment with clean transport initiatives, while Tampa Mayor Jane Castor highlighted the enhancement of the city’s transportation network. Waymo is also promoting the accessibility benefits of its service for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
Chief Marketing Officer Suzanne Philion stated, “From coast to coast, we’re focused on making everyday transportation safer, easier, and more accessible,” expressing excitement about bringing the advanced service to more riders.
