The FAA is forecasting a significant rise in U.S. space activities, potentially reaching 10,000 launches and reentries each year by 2035. This increase is expected to challenge existing spaceports, especially on Florida’s Space Coast, where the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station are approaching their launch capacity.
Currently, 83% of U.S. launches are conducted from Cape Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center, and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. In response, the FAA is soliciting public feedback on possible new launch sites in Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and offshore areas, while addressing why certain existing spaceports see limited use.
Officials are tasked with considering infrastructure needs, airspace management, safety measures to keep launches over open water, and the potential for expansion at new locations.
