California 12-Year-Old Creates Functional Printer for the Visually Impaired Using a Lego Robot Kit for Science Fair, Saving Over $1,600 Compared to Commercial Models

This article tells the story of Shubham Banerjee, a young inventor who created a Braille printer using a Lego robotics kit after noticing a significant price gap in existing Braille printers. Commercial models cost around $2,000, making them inaccessible for many, especially in developing countries. In contrast, Banerjee built a functional prototype for approximately $350, aiming to make Braille reading materials more affordable for visually impaired people.

Motivated by curiosity about how blind individuals read, Banerjee identified that existing printers, known as embossers, were overpriced and overbuilt. His device, named Braigo—a blend of “Braille” and “Lego”—uses simpler components to create raised dots that form Braille letters. After refining his design through multiple prototypes, he founded Braigo Labs, securing initial funding from his father and later from Intel Capital.

The implications of his invention extend beyond individual access to reading materials; as noted by professionals in the field, it could help empower visually impaired individuals to learn and use Braille practically. Banerjee’s story emphasizes the importance of questioning industry norms and exploring innovative solutions for real-world problems.
