The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia will close its museum on September 30, marking nearly 200 years since its opening. While the museum will shut its doors, the institution will continue to manage its vast collections and focus on research.
In a letter to members, leaders cited financial challenges and the need to protect the Academy’s scientific mission as reasons for the closure. They emphasized a commitment to public engagement and education, aiming to explore new ways to display elements of their collections sustainably.
The decision follows efforts to rebuild attendance post-pandemic, amidst rising operating costs. The Academy houses over 19 million biological specimens and is renowned for its archives in natural science literature.
Furthermore, Scott Cooper will step down as president and CEO but will remain in an advisory role during the transition. Founded in 1812, the Academy is recognized for its invaluable contributions to natural history.
