CPS fast-tracks payments for football referees; high school games set for this weekend.

The recent strike by football referees in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) due to delayed payments has disrupted several freshman and junior varsity games. After threatening to also skip varsity games, the referees agreed to work them following CPS’s expedited payment efforts. Referees reported they hadn’t been paid for weeks, despite expectations set by CPS that payments would begin in Week 4.

Officials emphasized their reliance on these earnings, as many of them work multiple games throughout the week. Notifications of game cancellations frustrated both coaches and players, impacting their development and experiences. CPS has acknowledged issues with payment processes and is working to rectify them to ensure timely compensation in the future.

Stakeholders, including state representatives and the Illinois High School Association, have expressed concern, stressing the importance of fair treatment for officials and the need for prompt conflict resolution.
