A recent review in Cell Press Blue has highlighted that consuming excessive protein isn’t necessarily beneficial for everyone. For many sedentary adults, reducing protein intake might promote healthier aging and even increase longevity.
After analyzing over 350 studies across humans and various organisms, researchers discovered that lower protein consumption could enhance metabolism, improve cellular response to nutrients, and reduce cellular damage. The advantages of this dietary change, however, are influenced by individual factors such as age, health status, and activity levels.
Dr. Dudley Lamming, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the study’s co-author, emphasized that while protein is crucial for muscle growth and exercise recovery in active individuals, most sedentary people might be consuming more protein than necessary, which can have detrimental health effects.
Emerging studies indicate that a diet lower in protein may aid weight reduction and optimize fasting blood sugar levels. The review also pointed out that excess intake of specific amino acids—methionine, isoleucine, and valine—could heighten the risk of obesity and age-related ailments.
Interestingly, reducing protein intake has been shown to elevate levels of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a hormone that enhances energy expenditure and blood sugar regulation, and lowers inflammation. Mouse studies revealed that higher FGF21 levels correlated with increased lifespan.
While lower protein intake is beneficial for many, certain groups like pregnant women and some older adults require higher protein levels for health. In contrast, athletes may consume more protein without adverse effects, thanks to their physical activity supporting muscle health.
The review suggests that protein intake recommendations should be tailored based on both age and physical activity levels.
