Exploring Personal Agents: Insights and Updates
Welcome! Today, we’ll dive into the latest results from our recent poll regarding personal agents. With a total of 996 votes, it seems there’s a mix of interest and curiosity about these tools. Let’s unpack what they are and some exciting developments in the field.
Poll Results: Do You Use a Personal Agent?
It appears that many of you might not be entirely convinced about personal agents. Just a light-hearted joke there! Essentially, personal agents consist of a collection of files and tools linked to your preferred agentic solution.
Session Walkthrough
In tomorrow’s post, I’ll provide an in-depth walkthrough of how I set up a fresh personal agent for myself. The process mainly involves organizing various files and tools. I shared a snapshot of my rather chaotic folder last week, which served as a reminder to tidy up my workspace before diving into any work.
Understanding the Components
The files serve as context during sessions—essentially, even memory operates as a file that the agent reads at the beginning of each session. It’s akin to last-minute cramming before a test! There are countless tools available with a wide array of features. However, if you organize a simple folder with these components, you can effectively have your own personal agent. This agent can utilize any tool you prefer. For example, if you’re not fond of Claude’s latest writing style, you can simply direct ChatGPT Work to reference the organized folder instead. It’s also worth noting that it doesn’t matter whether you’re using a coworker or code version of these agents.
Latest Insights from My AGENTS.md
A recent standout phrase I added to my AGENTS.md document during my agent organization is: “questions are requests for an answer, not changes.” This emphasizes that agents should focus on addressing questions directly rather than altering numerous aspects prior to providing an answer.
Latest App Developments
Here are two new Mac applications that have caught my attention:
- Meta AI: A ChatGPT-like Mac app designed primarily for general use rather than coding. It includes features like Wispr Flow for universal dictation. I experimented with it briefly but didn’t find it compelling enough to return.
- Berd by Block: This app integrates project-based folders with character-driven agents, allowing users to pin projects, agents, checklists, and sticky notes on a board. You can also use your Codex or Claude subscriptions for tokens. Check out the demo!
Industry Updates
OpenAI has momentarily paused improvements to their models due to the recent Hugging Face incident, suggesting that they are closely monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, Ramp has launched a new model ranking tool at router.com, which automatically selects the best model for the specific task. They claim this can result in a 40% reduction in costs for similar output. This announcement coincides with Stripe’s acquisition of OpenRouter, and investor communications regarding this deal were recently leaked.
Innovations and Research
Anthropic has deployed Claude to aid life scientists in two critical tasks: creating novel protein binders and expediting chemical analysis, both of which Claude has successfully accomplished. Dario’s recent tweets highlighted a significant point: labs must demonstrate the effectiveness of AI in curing diseases, rather than merely asserting its potential.
Collaboration with Slack
Slack is evolving as a collaborative platform, allowing users to code, build, and engage with agents directly within the interface. This enhances teamwork, not only among human collaborators but also with agents like Claude. Shopify recently reported that their Slack agent has successfully assisted other team members in leveraging agents effectively—a promising direction for the platform.
Company Funding and Achievements
Etched has announced a significant milestone, raising $700 million at a valuation of $21 billion from major investors like Jane Street, Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, A16Z, Peter Thiel, BCV, and Blackstone. Additionally, they have delivered their first rack to Jane Street, marking an exciting phase in their journey.
Wrapping Up
As the landscape of personal agents and AI development continues to evolve, it is essential to stay informed and organized. Tomorrow, we will delve deeper into the setup of personal agents and explore their potential benefits. Until then, feel free to share your thoughts on the current trends and technologies!
