This August, under-16s can travel on local buses for free as part of a government initiative to help tackle the cost of living. Families can now enjoy cheaper days out this summer without the burden of bus fare for children aged 5 to 15.
With access to stunning destinations like castles, country parks, and scenic coastlines, families can explore some of the country’s most beautiful spots without additional travel costs. This free bus travel scheme complements the existing £3 bus fare cap, aiming to keep more money in families’ pockets while facilitating enjoyable outings.
From ancient woodlands to historic sites and beaches, free bus travel ensures that transportation costs won’t hinder summer plans. Notable destinations accessible through this initiative include Hadrian’s Wall, the Peak District, and the New Forest.
Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood emphasized, “We know how hard it can be for families to enjoy their time together amid cost of living pressures. This summer, we’re giving families room to breathe by allowing children to travel for free—part of our Great British Summer Savings scheme, which also offers discounts for attractions, restaurants, and train fares.”
Lightwood added that families can access a plethora of beautiful sites, aiming for everyone to enjoy their summer holidays without missing out on delightful experiences.
