A Pet-Friendly Travel Guide: Enjoying 48 Hours in Dana Point with Your Dog This August

Exploring Dana Point: A Dog-Friendly Getaway

When it comes to dog-friendly destinations in Southern California, Dana Point offers a perfect blend of coastal charm and outdoor adventure. Known for its stunning harbor and beautiful beaches, Dana Point is a paradise for both humans and their four-legged friends.

Recently, I took my Chiweenie, Poppy, along for a two-day getaway filled with relaxation and adventure. From luxurious stays to dog-friendly dining options, here’s a look at how to spend 48 hours in Dana Point, especially if you’re planning a trip to celebrate National Dog Day.

Where to Stay: Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa

Situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa recently underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation. With 378 rooms showcasing California coastal design, it is an exceptional home base for a dog-friendly stay. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making both Poppy and me feel at home. The resort also has lush green spaces ideal for quick walks or games of fetch before exploring the nearby dog-friendly beaches.

Day 1: Coastal Adventures and Sunset Dining

Morning: Breakfast at What a Dish Café

Start your day at What a Dish Café, enjoying breakfast on their dog-friendly patio. The menu features organic, sustainable options, and Poppy even enjoyed some “pupcakes” made with grain-free peanut butter and apple.

Midday: Kayaking with Westwind Sailing

After breakfast, we headed to Westwind Sailing for a kayaking session. They offer dog-friendly rentals and even life jackets for pups. Poppy was thrilled to sit at the front as we paddled through the serene waters of Dana Point Harbor.

Lunch: Harpoon Henry’s

For lunch, I recommend Harpoon Henry’s Seafood Restaurant. With a dog-friendly outdoor patio offering stunning marina views, I enjoyed grilled fish tacos while Poppy relaxed nearby.

Afternoon: The Doggie Barkery

After lunch, we visited The Doggie Barkery, a charming shop selling homemade treats and toys. Poppy indulged in a custom dog cake, and I couldn’t resist buying her a new leash.

Evening: Dinner at Truly Pizza

For a laid-back dinner, Truly Pizza offers delicious wood-fired pizza. The outdoor seating is dog-friendly, and Poppy enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere.

Day 2: Trails, Yoga, and More Dining

Morning: Yoga at Lantern Bay Park

We kicked off our second day with dog-friendly yoga at Lantern Bay Park. While I got my stretch in, Poppy soaked up the sun.

Lunch: Craft House

Next, we visited Craft House for lunch. This gastropub emphasizes local sourcing and features a dog-friendly patio. I loved their craft house smash burger.

Afternoon: Bluff Top Trail Walk

We then walked the Dana Point Bluff Top Trail, which offers breathtaking views. Poppy enjoyed exploring the trail with her tail wagging non-stop.

Evening: Dinner at Lantern’s Edge

We concluded our trip with dinner at Lantern’s Edge at the resort. Poppy feasted on beef tenderloin tips, while I enjoyed fresh oysters and seafood pasta.

Tips for Traveling with Your Dog in Dana Point

  • Plan Ahead: Confirm pet policies at restaurants and attractions.
  • Pack Essentials: Don’t forget water, a leash, waste bags, and a cozy blanket.
  • Know the Rules: Be aware of leash laws, especially at beaches and trails.

Final Thoughts

Dana Point stands out among dog-friendly destinations in California. It was one of Poppy’s and my favorites for its welcoming dining options and activities. With its perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, Dana Point is a delightful getaway for you and your furry companion.
