SoftBank Reports Strong Q1 Profit Driven by Intel Stake
SoftBank Group announced on Thursday that its fiscal first-quarter profits exceeded market expectations, largely due to significant gains on its investment in Intel. The Japanese company reported a net profit of 347.3 billion yen (approximately $2.2 billion), surpassing the 120.23 billion yen anticipated by analysts, but reflecting an 18% decline year-on-year.
Key Highlights
- Intel Investment: SoftBank realized a 1.3 trillion yen gain from its shares in Intel. The company had invested around $2 billion in Intel last year, which has seen a remarkable share price surge of nearly 400% over the past year.
- Vision Fund Performance: The Vision Fund, which invests in companies like OpenAI and ByteDance, saw a net gain of $1.7 billion primarily from a $2.2 billion increase in ByteDance’s valuation, offsetting losses in other investments such as PayPay.
- Profit Analysis: The Vision Funds posted a profit of 5.4 billion yen, a significant fall from 451.4 billion yen the previous year. Notably, no gains or losses were attributed to SoftBank’s involvement with OpenAI in this quarter.
OpenAI Investment Insights
SoftBank has pledged over $60 billion in OpenAI, projecting to attain a 13% ownership stake. However, the company did not report any financial changes associated with this investment in the latest quarter.
Despite ambitious investments in the AI sector, scrutiny from investors is growing, especially regarding tangible returns. SoftBank’s share price has dropped by 34% from its record high in June, raising questions about its funding sustainability and concentration in investments like Arm and OpenAI.
Losses in AI Segment
SoftBank reported a 200.8 billion yen loss in its AI computing segment, a marked increase from the 32.4 billion yen loss in the same quarter last year. The losses were attributed to elevated research and development costs at the companies included in this segment, such as Arm, Graphcore, and Ampere.
CEO Masayoshi Son reaffirmed his belief in the AI revolution’s potential, comparing it to the profound impact of the internet. Son emphasized that the current period represents the dawn of another technological revolution.
