India Eases Foreign Investment Rules for E-Commerce

On July 23, the Indian government announced a significant change to its foreign investment regulations, allowing e-commerce companies to purchase products directly from Indian sellers and sell them to overseas customers. This change is seen as a major win for Amazon, which had been advocating for the modification for several months.

Previously, India had strict restrictions that prohibited foreign e-commerce companies from selling goods directly to consumers, whether domestically or internationally. They were only permitted to operate as marketplaces that connected buyers and sellers for a fee. The government stated that this relaxation of rules aims to boost exports.
