73% of Pet Owners Favor Road Trips to Flying for Vacation Travel with Their Pets

Holiday Travel Plans: Pets in Tow

For many pet owners, the decision to travel during the holidays hinges on whether their furry companions can join them. A recent survey by Subaru of America reveals that 73% of pet owners prefer road trips over flying to accommodate their pets. As the holiday season approaches, 68% of respondents say their pets will influence their travel plans, with 45% having declined travel invitations that did not allow for their animals.

Key Insights from the Survey:

  1. Pets Matter: “Holidays are about family, including our pets,” said Christina Valente, Subaru’s Love Promise Community Commitment Manager. Many owners consider their pets when planning trips to visit loved ones.

  2. Survey Details: Conducted by Talker Research with 2,000 U.S. adults who own cats or dogs, the survey underscores pets’ significant impact on travel decisions, from transportation choices to potential cancellations.

  3. Changing Plans: Over 25% of owners might alter their plans due to their pets:

    • 10% might host rather than travel.
    • 10% may shorten their trips for pet care.
    • 8% might avoid certain gatherings if pets aren’t welcome.
  4. Travel Preferences: A considerable majority (51%) report that they prefer traveling with pets over humans.

  5. Generational Differences: Younger pet owners, particularly Gen Z and millennials, are more inclined to bring their animals along, with 35% having done so compared to 22% of older demographics like Gen X and baby boomers.

Trevor Maki from Subaru notes, “Bringing their dog, cat, or other family pets is essential for holiday travel.”

As travel plans unfold, it’s clear that pets will continue to shape how many families celebrate the season.
