Couple Sells Their Home in England to Explore the Globe with Their Children

Family Raffles Home to Travel the World

Daniel Leigh and his wife Lauren Vaknine embarked on an unexpected journey after deciding to raffle their five-bedroom home in Elstree, England, estimated at about $2 million. The idea blossomed after a trip to the U.S. ignited a desire for travel, prompting them to think beyond their traditional lifestyle.

When returning from their trip, they discovered others successfully raffling their homes online. Inspired, the couple set a ticket price of five British pounds (approximately $6.75) to offer their house as a sweepstakes prize.

“While someone new makes memories in our home, we get to go and make some of our own,” said Leigh, who has worked in educational recruitment for over 20 years. The couple aims to sell 550,000 tickets to cover costs, with excess funds directed towards Solace Women’s Aid, a charity supporting women and children affected by domestic violence.

Their quest for freedom stems from a reflective moment—the realization that life shouldn’t feel like a continuous treadmill. Both parents want to instill this perspective in their two children, Braxton and Viva, emphasizing the importance of living in the moment and chasing genuine experiences.

After consulting various resources about home raffles, including a New York Times article that highlighted the success of similar endeavors, they initiated their raffle with hopes for a December 7 draw.

Life-Altering Decisions

Leigh and Vaknine, both 42, have connections to their hometown, while their travels have led them to question the constraints of stability. Their experiences in the U.S., such as kayaking and enjoying nature, prompted them to reevaluate their aspirations.

“Living on a lake was the most peaceful life I’ve ever had,” Leigh shared. He contrasted this tranquility with their life in England, where indoor activities dominate due to inclement weather. The couple desires a life filled with enriching experiences rather than merely accumulating wealth.

Vaknine, a holistic wellness coach who has overcome significant health challenges, emphasizes the quest for deeper joy and fulfillment beyond mundane routines. “For me, the extraordinary life isn’t about mansions, yachts or extravagance. It’s about experiencing life fully.”

The family has turned the raffle into a collective project, allowing their children to learn about dedication and initiative by promoting the initiative through social media.

Future Aspirations

With aspirations to explore all 50 U.S. states, the couple hopes the raffle might lead them to travel destinations including Australia and India. Regardless of the raffle outcome, they envision a life filled with adventure.

Ultimately, Leigh underscores the importance of living life dynamically and embracing opportunities. They encourage others to reflect on their own goals: “If not now, when? That question changed everything.”
