Goodbye to Tokyo’s Unicorn Gundam
Tokyo’s life-size Unicorn Gundam statue, a landmark for anime fans, is scheduled to be removed at the end of August. Standing 19.7 meters (64.6 feet) high outside the Diver City complex in Odaiba, it has become a symbol of the area since its completion in September 2017, attracting global visitors.
Both the Gundam franchise and the statue’s official website confirmed the removal, leaving many fans surprised by the short notice. Bandai has not provided a reason for this decision, especially as the statue continues to draw large crowds.
Despite the sad news, Bandai announced a new project called the “Gundam Landmark Concept,” aiming to create an attraction for fans worldwide. Details remain sparse, but with the removal of the Unicorn Gundam, Tokyo will temporarily lack a life-sized Gundam statue.
This isn’t the first time Odaiba has experienced a Gundam-shaped void; the original RX-78-2 Gundam statue was removed in 2017 before the Unicorn took its place. Many fans are hopeful that this farewell is temporary and that a new Gundam will soon rise in its place.
