Washington Space Council Appoints Bill Pike

UPDATE: October 9 at 3:15 p.m.

Bill Pike, deputy director for science and technology at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has been appointed to the newly established Washington Space Council. This council, announced by Governor Bob Ferguson, comprises members from government, academia, industry, and space-related technology sectors aimed at enhancing Washington’s competitiveness in the space industry.

Pike, who oversees PNNL’s science and technology strategy, has a rich background in national security and has contributed to various fields including visual data analysis and machine learning. He holds a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and a bachelor’s degree from Carleton College in Minnesota.

Council Goals

Founded on September 29 during an event at the Museum of Flight, the Governor’s Space Council will focus on assessing Washington’s position in the space sector compared to other leading states and nations. The council aims to identify growth barriers, evaluate workforce needs, and assess infrastructural capacities necessary for commercial launch capabilities.

With more than 90 space companies and over 13,000 workers, Washington’s space industry contributes approximately $4.6 billion annually to the economy. Notable historical achievements include Boeing’s role in constructing lunar rovers for the Apollo missions.

Governor Ferguson emphasized the need for the council to innovate and adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of the space sector to maintain Washington’s leadership position in the industry.
