Dogs Can Now Travel from the US to Mexico as Agencies Work to Curb Screwworm Proliferation

Pet dogs can now travel from the U.S. to Mexico after being briefly banned due to concerns about the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite affecting livestock. The USDA has updated its guidance, allowing dog travel to resume under established procedures.

While dogs traveling from Mexico to the U.S. must meet strict entry requirements, including a veterinarian’s certification regarding screwworm inspections, the USDA has confirmed six cases of this parasite in the U.S., which includes one infected dog.

Officials are actively working to contain the outbreak, emphasizing that the U.S. food supply is safe and that the screwworm does not infest food products. Animal owners are advised to monitor their pets for specific symptoms and contact authorities if screwworm infection is suspected.
