CDC Alerts Travelers Worldwide About Potentially Dangerous ‘Breakbone Fever’

The CDC has issued a global travel alert for dengue fever, indicating that travelers returning to the U.S. are testing positive for the disease. This Level 1 advisory urges travelers to exercise usual precautions.

  • Dengue Information: Dengue, also known as “breakbone fever,” is transmitted through infected mosquito bites and can cause severe symptoms including fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and in severe cases, hemorrhaging and organ failure.

  • Current Situation: There are reports of increased dengue cases in various countries. So far this year, over 525 cases have been reported in the U.S.

Countries with Elevated Risk:

The CDC has identified countries where dengue risk is particularly high, including:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Bolivia
  • Colombia
  • Cuba
  • Vietnam

Prevention Measures:

Travelers are advised to:

  • Use insect repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and pants
  • Stay in accommodations with air conditioning or window screens
