It evaluates gold's performance as a financial asset throughout various financial cycles (credit, equity, and property). By analyzing discrete peaks and troughs, the study identifies financial cycles across markets using the Baxter-King filter and Harding and Pagan’s methodology. It also estimates time-varying coefficients by regressing gold returns against other assets, such as the U.S. dollar (DXY) and stocks (MSCI), to assess gold's diversifying qualities. Furthermore, it explores the time-dependent relationship between gold returns and financial market features like liquidity, volatility, and yield spread to elucidate its role as a safe haven. The findings indicate that gold serves as a diversifying asset and offers a hedge against risks during turbulent periods, especially when volatility is high, reinforcing its status as a safe haven asset. This behavior is well illustrated by the surge in gold prices following both the global financial crisis and the recent market turbulence caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
