How French Fries Can Serve as an Affordable Electrolyte Source for Runners

Rethinking Electrolytes: Why French Fries Could Be the Best Post-Run Snack

Daily social media scrolls reveal numerous running influencers promoting pricey electrolyte packets. Many of these products claim to replenish lost sodium and enhance post-run recovery. According to Featherstone Nutrition, runners lose about 900 milligrams of sodium per liter of sweat, making it crucial to keep sodium levels in check, especially if you’re prone to sweating or running in warmer climates.

A Personal Journey with Electrolytes

I succumbed to the trend, spending over $100 on various electrolyte powders during my marathon training, hoping to find the perfect solution. Unfortunately, most tasted awful and left me with cavities from the sugar content.

So, I decided to return to my childhood favorite: McDonald’s french fries. Surprisingly, they turned out to be a delightful alternative for replenishing lost salt. A large order contains 400 mg of sodium and 1,000 mg of potassium—comparable to leading electrolyte brands but tastier and free from sugar or stevia, which can upset some runners’ stomachs.

The Benefits of French Fries

Beyond their electrolyte benefits, fries serve as a fantastic post-run snack, packed with carbs and calories to keep you fueled until your next meal. I often stop at McDonald’s three times a week during heavy training.

However, I acknowledge that fries aren’t easily consumable mid-run. For intra-run fueling, I lean towards salt tabs and Gatorade powder, which is cost-effective at less than $16 for a 76-ounce package (providing over 90 servings). While Gatorade offers less sodium, paired with my high-sodium diet and post-run fries, it suffices.

Simple Solutions Over Overhyped Products

I’m not opposed to electrolyte powders—I keep a few in my pantry for especially sweaty days. Still, I believe affordable and delicious alternatives exist for sodium replenishment.

Before trendy brands like LMNT and Skratch took over, I thrived on fries and Gatorade. Not everything needs excessive marketing to work effectively; sometimes the simplest and tastiest solutions are the best.

Conclusion

Next time you contemplate fancy electrolyte options, consider reaching for fries instead. Sometimes, familiarity is the most effective—and enjoyable—fuel for your running journey.
