AB-Biotics Research: L. plantarum Probiotic Supports Weight Control and Enhances Mood

Researchers from AB-Biotics, Spain, 3 Waves Wellness, and Wasatch Scientific have highlighted promising findings on the psychobiotic strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum KABP-051. This strain’s potential benefits extend beyond mood and cognition to metabolic health aspects like weight management and energy regulation.

The study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, involved 60 overweight adults (BMI 25–35) with moderate stress, who took either KABP-051 or a placebo for 12 weeks. Key results included:

  • Probiotic participants saw an average 1.26% reduction in body fat and 2.4% decrease in body weight.
  • Improvements in mood were noted, with reduced fatigue and confusion in the probiotic group.

Miquel Angel Bonachera, co-founder of AB-Biotics, emphasized the intertwined nature of mental well-being and body weight, suggesting that enhancing mood and energy through the gut–brain axis may facilitate healthier lifestyle choices.

Study Details:

  • Participants received weekly lifestyle education on nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management.
  • Primary endpoints included body weight, waist circumference, and body fat, measured using InBody technology.
  • Mood was assessed using the Profile of Mood States questionnaire.

At the conclusion of the trial, the probiotic group exhibited significant improvements in body weight, waist circumference, and body fat percentage compared to placebo. Furthermore, mood assessments indicated positive shifts in fatigue and confusion levels.

Overall, these findings suggest that KABP-051 may serve as a beneficial tool for consumers seeking to enhance both their mental health and body composition effectively. Further research in larger populations is recommended to explore these effects in depth.
