Kroger to compensate $1.25 million following California’s claim that Carbmaster bread labels significantly reduced calorie counts.

California officials have announced that Kroger will pay $1.25 million to settle a lawsuit centered on misleading calorie information on various Carbmaster bread products. The lawsuit claimed that five different bread varieties had incorrect calorie counts, with some products advertised as having 30 calories when they actually contained 50, and Carbmaster Hamburger Buns presented as 50 calories instead of 100.

The misleading labels, which were used both on FDA nutrition labels and packaging since their introduction in 2021, prompted prosecutors to allege violations of California’s false advertising and unfair competition laws. Notably, one set of incorrect information remained online for nearly two years, even after Kroger became aware of the investigation.

Officials emphasized the importance of accurate nutrition labels for consumers’ dietary choices, with the Santa Barbara County District Attorney stating that Kroger had a duty to provide correct nutritional information.
