After 14 Years of Researching Children’s Picky Eating, Here’s What She Discovered

Helen Zoe Veit, a food historian at Michigan State University, has been researching the reasons behind children being picky eaters for over a decade. In an interview with Newsweek, she posited that the issue is less about biology and more about historical changes in food culture, a theme elaborated in her book, Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History.

Veit’s findings challenge the conventional belief that children are naturally selective about food. She notes that in the 19th century, there was no prevalent notion of picky eating; children often shared meals with adults and were exposed to a wide variety of foods. Factors that have contributed to the rise of picky eating include:

  1. Changes in Meal Patterns: Children now experience less “pleasant pre-meal hunger” due to constant access to snacks and refrigeration, diminishing their appetite for main meals.
  2. Alternatives and Convenience: The availability of ready-made meals has led to more choices, meaning children can easily refuse what’s on their plate.
  3. Involvement in Food Preparation: Historically, children participated in growing and preparing food, which fostered appreciation and interest in eating.
  4. Cultural Shifts in Parenting: Since the mid-20th century, prevalent parenting advice has discouraged parents from strictly directing their children’s food choices, contributing to a more permissive feeding culture.

Despite these challenges, Veit asserts that children can learn to enjoy various foods, advocating for repeated exposure and a positive approach to mealtime. She stresses the importance of fostering a healthy relationship with food without force or punishment, framing each new food experience as an opportunity. Ultimately, she emphasizes that while societal changes have influenced picky eating, parents still wield significant influence in promoting adventurous eating habits.
