University of Cincinnati Unveils First Private AI Tool for Student Support

In a significant move to enhance academic and health services, the University of Cincinnati has introduced a private AI platform exclusively for its campus community called BearcatGPT. Set to revolutionize support for students and faculty, this new platform is reportedly the first of its kind offered by any university in Ohio.

“Last semester marked the launch of BearcatGPT, and in a remarkably short time, over 100 agents have been created on the platform,” shared Bharath Prabhakaran, UC’s vice president and chief digital officer.

Through BearcatGPT, students have access to various specialized agents such as “Bearcat Study Pal,” “Bearcat Test-Prepper,” and “Bearcat Genius,” which are designed to assist them in their studies, exam preparation, and daily routines.

At UC’s Clermont campus, the need for math tutoring became apparent. “We often lack enough tutors to meet the demands of our students. So, a faculty member collaborated with us to develop a set of tutoring agents based on BearcatGPT that allows students to learn through the Socratic method,” Prabhakaran explained.

Many students believe that this university-specific platform could greatly benefit first-year students.

Conner Menard, a freshman majoring in international affairs, expressed his thoughts, saying, “As a first-generation college student, there are aspects of this experience that I find overwhelming. I believe AI can help simplify that information.”

While BearcatGPT maintains strict privacy over user queries, some students are still skeptical about its effectiveness. It’s important to note that BearcatGPT aims to guide students through concepts rather than merely providing answers.

“Unlike other platforms, BearcatGPT won’t simply give you the answer to your homework. Instead, it will say, ‘Let’s work through the concepts together as a tutor would,'” Prabhakaran emphasized.

Era Balla, a senior studying bioscience, mentioned her hesitance about using AI. She worries that students might not utilize it as intended, opting instead for quicker solutions from platforms like ChatGPT. “Why choose something that doesn’t provide immediate answers when you could just use standard ChatGPT?” Balla questioned.

BearcatGPT was first introduced to faculty in 2025 and rolled out to students in February of this year. Officials also plan to launch an agent that will assist faculty in making coursework more accessible to students with disabilities.

Despite uncertainties surrounding the tool, many students are open to exploring it. “Transitioning fully may be challenging, but I’m definitely willing to give it a try,” remarked UC student Rylan Isaacs.
