The U.S. Coast That Preserved African Cultural Heritage

The Gullah Geechee cuisine is a rich fusion of traditional West and Central African cooking techniques, utilizing local seafood, vegetables, grains, and meats. One notable dish is Lowcountry red rice, a flavorful combination of rice, tomatoes, spices, smoked pork, and sausage, often likened to jollof rice, a celebrated dish in the Senegambia region known for its one-pot preparation with tomatoes, spices, and meat.

Moreover, the Gullah Geechee community has adapted West African basketry traditions using available materials like sweetgrass, bulrush, palmetto, and pine. Cultural practices such as the “ring shout,” wherein participants move in a circle, clapping and singing in a “call and response” manner, reflect a strong connection to West African musical and spiritual heritage.
