Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, has been confirmed dead following coordinated attacks on military sites across the country, as stated by a government spokesperson.

According to the spokesperson, Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, Camara was killed when assailants targeted his home.

His residence in the garrison town of Kati was assaulted on Saturday amid simultaneous attacks from an al-Qaeda affiliate and Tuareg rebels.

President Goita was “alive and well in a secure location,” according to Haque.

“When the attack occurred, he was relocated to safety, ensuring he remains in command of the military,” he further explained.

In addition to Kati, gunmen targeted several other areas throughout Mali, including Bamako, Gao, Kidal in the north, and the central city of Sevare.

Haque reported that residents in Kidal could still hear heavy gunfire and loud explosions on Sunday, indicating the ongoing nature of the operation more than 24 hours post-assault.

Analyst Bulama Bukarti expressed concern that “more battles for territorial and strategic control” are likely in the coming days.

He also emphasized that armed factions previously at odds have united to confront a common adversary — the state of Mali.

“These are two groups with distinct objectives,” Bukarti informed Al Jazeera.

“However, they agreed to collaborate last year, and what we are witnessing over the last few days is the implementation of that agreement.”
