Computer Science Student Becomes CEO Prior to Graduation

Marcel Slowikowski: Innovating AI with Sparset

As fall commencement approaches, many Iowa State University seniors are considering their future professional paths. However, Marcel Slowikowski, a computer science major in the class of 2026, is focused on his burgeoning AI startup, Sparset. The company, which has garnered attention from global investors, was launched this summer with Slowikowski as founder and CEO alongside co-founder Travis Chauvin. Initially named Ora Frontier, the team refined their focus and rebranded as Sparset, a nod to the computer science concept of “sparse set.”

The Mission Behind Sparset

Sparset aims to help companies run AI models more efficiently, utilizing less computational resources and reducing costs. The platform employs autonomous AI agents to manage AI workloads across various hardware environments. Slowikowski envisions a future where AI assists in managing repetitive tasks, allowing human workers to concentrate on complex problem-solving, noting, “Our goal… is to bring down the inference costs by almost one-tenth of what is currently on the market.”

Early Success and Recognition

Shortly after its formation, Slowikowski and Chauvin participated in a student bootcamp by s16vc, a venture capital firm, and subsequently joined the Founders for Founders Hub startup accelerator. Sparset distinguished itself by becoming the fastest company in the accelerator’s history to secure funding.

A Passion for Technology

Growing up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Slowikowski developed a fascination for technology early on, taking on the role of the family tech expert from a young age. During high school, he discovered computer science, which prompted his decision to attend Iowa State, drawn by the supportive academic environment.

Academic and Extracurricular Involvements

While developing Sparset, Slowikowski also engaged in various activities at Iowa State. He became president of the Running Club, organized events, and participated in hackathons and game development projects. His game, EUReCA, aims to introduce research and creative opportunities to students and is part of Iowa State’s undergraduate research initiative.

Aspirations for the Future

Despite its youth, Slowikowski has ambitious dreams for Sparset, aspiring to create a tech giant comparable to Google or Microsoft. He envisions making sophisticated AI models accessible across various devices, emphasizing the importance of technology working alongside humans for a better future.
