AI Chatbot Traffic Grows 7x Faster Than Social Media, Yet Still Lags Behind

Social media continues to attract significantly more traffic than AI chatbot services, drawing in four times as many visitors; however, the growth rate of AI is impressive, increasing seven times faster, as indicated by an analysis from Similarweb. The demographics of users in both categories are similar, with the highest engagement occurring among individuals aged 25 to 34, although AI users tend to be slightly older.

Two Similarweb infographics side by side: total website visits for social media (41 billion) vs. AI chatbots (9.3 billion) on the left, and year-over-year traffic growth on the right, showing social media at 6.32 percent and AI chatbots at 44.39 percent.

The usage of devices reveals a distinct trend: social media traffic is nearly evenly split between desktop and mobile, while a striking 72 percent of traffic to AI tools originates from desktop devices. This indicates that chatbots are primarily utilized for work and productivity purposes. Furthermore, social media users tend to engage for longer durations, whereas AI users typically operate in shorter, task-focused sessions.

Both sectors depend on direct traffic, although AI services lean even more heavily on it: 73 percent compared to social media’s 50 percent. On the other hand, social media benefits from a larger influx of organic search traffic, likely due to its publicly indexed content being more visible in search results. In contrast, AI chatbots do not generate searchable content, leading users to navigate directly to their favored tools.
