In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly permeated our daily lives, becoming a topic of both intrigue and concern. With its transformative potential, there is much speculation about how AI will shape our existence in the next ten years. However, one area where AI is already making a significant positive impact is in health care.
AI is enhancing various facets of care delivery, offering promising advancements and improving patient outcomes.
Accelerating AI Adoption
In response to a request for information from the Department of Health and Human Services regarding the acceleration of AI adoption in clinical care, we communicated our observations to the department, highlighting the following points:
“Our member hospitals and health systems recognize the potential of AI tools to improve patient outcomes, enhance access to care, and lower costs. With the help of technologies like ambient listening for clinical documentation, chatbots for scheduling and triaging, and algorithms that assist clinicians in interpreting medical images, AI-based tools are making a substantial positive impact on hospitals and their patients.”
Nonetheless, it is crucial that the ongoing advancement and adoption of AI in health care are approached judiciously. Policymakers must strike a balance between fostering innovation and establishing appropriate safeguards to ensure patient safety and enhance the health care experience.
To help facilitate the widespread adoption of AI, we have urged HHS to:
Synchronize and leverage existing policy frameworks to avoid redundancy.
While AI policies should promote flexibility to keep pace with innovation, they should also be aligned with existing health care policy frameworks to minimize redundancies.
Remove regulatory barriers.
Certain laws and regulations within the health care landscape, such as the inconsistent state privacy laws, have inadvertently limited hospitals and health systems in their ability to create and implement AI tools. We have made recommendations to mitigate these regulatory barriers.
Ensure the safe and effective use of AI.
We advocate for policies that ensure clinicians play a role in decision-making regarding algorithms that could affect access to care or the delivery of care. This includes maintaining consistent privacy standards for third-party vendors and setting post-deployment benchmarks for health care AI developers to ensure the tools’ continued reliability.
Align incentives and address infrastructural factors.
For AI to be successfully integrated into health care, appropriate incentives and infrastructure investment are essential. These elements are vital for both provider readiness and patient acceptance. However, it is important that reimbursement for AI tools does not detract from funding for other necessary medical services.
These thoughtful recommendations can help ensure a smooth integration of AI’s remarkable capabilities within the health care system, ultimately enhancing the care experience for both patients and providers.
Leadership Dialogue AI Video
To illustrate how AI is being implemented in hospitals and health systems, we have released a Leadership Dialogue video featuring Marc Boom, M.D., president and CEO of Houston Methodist and the 2026 AHA board chair, alongside Amy Rockman, director of the Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence, a collaborative initiative of Rutgers Health and RWJ Barnabas Health. They delve into the applications of AI that are yielding measurable improvements in hospital safety and clinician burnout, emphasizing the benefits of a “living lab” approach that utilizes interdisciplinary teams and responsible AI integration to enhance patient care and support the health care workforce.
The belief in AI’s potential to revolutionize health care has been steadily growing. In 2019, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella remarked, “AI is perhaps the most transformational technology of our time, and health care is perhaps AI’s most pressing application.”
This serves as a thought-provoking reminder of the importance of getting AI integration right from the outset.
