AI Chatbots Mislead Teens on Nutrition, Promoting Unhealthy Meal Plans

A recent study has revealed that AI chatbots frequently provide inadequate dietary and nutrition advice for teenagers.

Researchers discovered that several commonly used chatbots designed meal plans for adolescents that were deficient in calories and carbohydrates, while being excessively high in protein and fat. On average, these AI-generated plans fell nearly 700 calories short of guidelines provided by a dietitian.

This is concerning, as teens require essential macro and micro-nutrients to support their growing bodies and minds. Following restrictive diets can result in significant harm and potentially lead to negative long-term habits.

“Long-term consequences of relying on restrictive diets devised by AI may include increased bone loss in later life. It’s not just about skeletal strength; it also involves teeth and ligaments. Many young individuals might even experience premature tooth loss,” stated Christy Bock, a dietitian and nutritionist at Children’s National Hospital. “In the short term, lacking essential nutrients daily makes it harder to think, learn, and for our bodies to function optimally.”

Moreover, AI systems do not possess clinical training.

“While AI technology holds great potential, there are no validated tools currently available within that framework,” remarked Christy Bock. “In healthcare, others with technical or clinical backgrounds assure you that you receive reliable information.”

It’s also crucial to highlight the value of a relationship with a dietitian, who can track your progress and adjust plans as needed.

After establishing nutritional guidelines with a licensed dietitian, you can use AI to help generate meal ideas.

Maggie Tagari, a dietitian with MedStar Health, noted that AI lacks capabilities such as “motivational interviewing.”

“This technique, which registered dietitians are trained in, enables patients to reflect on how to overcome obstacles. It helps them understand why nutrition is vital and what will motivate them to maintain their efforts. When setbacks occur, it also provides a framework for resilience. This connection is essential and something AI cannot replicate,” explained Tagare.

A dietitian considers various factors, including age, weight, gender, individual goals, lab results, medications, and social determinants of health. This holistic approach is something AI has yet to master.

“Furthermore, we need to consider the social context in which our teenagers are growing up. It’s essential for caregivers to model healthy behaviors and to discuss nutrition openly. What does our home environment offer? Are we serving nutritious foods and enjoying meals together? Are we ensuring our teens aren’t skipping meals before going to school? We bear a responsibility to foster healthy habits in our families,” Tagare emphasized.
