Alabama Competes to Establish Proposed Space Academy in Huntsville

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has officially presented Huntsville as the preferred site for a proposed United States Space Academy to a federal commission. The proposal emphasizes the state’s rich contributions to space exploration, accentuating Huntsville’s established connections to federal agencies, military facilities, and aerospace companies, alongside its educational institutions.

Ivey highlighted Alabama’s historical significance in the space sector, recalling the state’s involvement in the Apollo program, and expressed pride in contributing to America’s future endeavors in space exploration. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle echoed these sentiments, underlining the city’s vibrant role in space development and its strong STEM education initiatives.

The proposed academy aims to prepare future leaders in various space-related fields, including science and engineering. The federal commission, led by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, is currently evaluating potential locations as part of the selection process for the academy. This submission marks Alabama’s initial effort to secure this significant educational institution, especially ahead of President Trump’s visit to the state.
