Anthropic’s IPO Talks with Nvidia
In a significant development in the tech space, Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI model, is in discussions to potentially include Nvidia as an anchor investor in its forthcoming initial public offering (IPO). This move could pave the way for what might be the largest IPO in history, with Anthropic looking to raise up to $100 billion and achieve a valuation of about $2 trillion.
According to reports, Nvidia is contemplating investing up to $10 billion in the IPO, although the negotiations are still ongoing and may change as they progress. Anthropic has chosen not to comment on the situation, while Nvidia has not responded to inquiries at this time.
Strategic Computing Partnership
Nvidia’s involvement could serve to solidify its role as a strategic partner for Anthropic, which heavily relies on Nvidia chips in its operations. This partnership is deemed essential as Anthropic seeks to diversify its chip sources amid the increasing demand for its Claude AI and challenges related to computing capacity.
In November 2022, Nvidia announced its intention to invest substantially in Anthropic as part of a broader collaboration. Additionally, Anthropic has committed to purchasing $30 billion worth of Microsoft Azure computing capacity, which is furnished by Nvidia technology.
Valuation Surge
As Anthropic prepares for its IPO, it is also investing in developing specialized chips tailored for its Claude AI, aiming to have more control over hardware costs. The IPO is expected to finalize before the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November 2024.
In May, Anthropic raised $65 billion, leading to a post-investment valuation of $965 billion. By the end of July, its projected annualized revenue run rate had surged to over $65 billion, compared to around $9 billion the previous year. The company’s anticipated valuation is also influenced by its revenue forecast of $190–200 billion by 2028.
