News 12 | Westchester | Revitalized 1882 Landmark Supports Arts and Culture in Poughkeepsie

The Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center is a pivotal part of Poughkeepsie’s cultural landscape, located in a beautifully restored historic building originally called the Brothers Institute for Arts, Literature, and Science, which dates back to 1882.

Executive Director J. Andrew Burgreen noted that the restoration was possible thanks to a trust fund established by local attorneys Charlotte Canning Hackett and John Hackett. The center provides a range of artistic experiences, from exhibitions and live performances to educational programs and special events, showcasing local and regional talent across four rotating galleries.

Additionally, the center hosts adult ballet classes and maintains a historic theater known for its exceptional acoustics, designed originally for chamber music and lectures. Burgreen described the center as Poughkeepsie’s “hidden gem,” emphasizing the strong sense of community fostered by the center and its sister building nearby, which houses various businesses and wellness programs, including massage therapy and martial arts. This vibrant space encourages collaboration among artists and community members alike.
