Marion County’s Homeless Pet Crisis: Voices of Change Animal League Expands
MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A local nonprofit, Voices of Change Animal League, is stepping up to address the urgent issue of homeless pets in the area, where a staggering 40,000 cats and dogs are estimated to be unspayed and unneutered. This situation is overwhelming local shelters and veterinary clinics, prompting the nonprofit to expand its services to accommodate this growing need.
Executive Director Kate Rengel emphasizes their commitment, stating, “We really want to support people that love their pets and keep them in their homes.” Currently, the clinic receives at least 10 animal intake requests daily. With around 50 dogs and 15 cats already on-site, plus additional animals in foster care, the demand for care is evident.
When pets are turned away, owners often have limited options, sometimes leaving their animals without the necessary care. “We are really needing to expand those services in order to meet the needs of our community,” Rengel added.
Expansion Plans
The expansion will introduce over 8,500 square feet of new building space, including:
- A new vet clinic and resource center offering essential services like vaccinations.
- A quarantine and isolation facility to allow for greater animal intake.
Rengel points out that this growth will not only benefit Voices of Change but also help alleviate pressures on the county shelter, reinforcing their role as a supportive partner in the community.
Focus on Prevention
Rengel stresses that spaying and neutering pets is critical for long-term solutions to the region’s homeless pet issue. “Preventing unwanted litters is essential to keeping pets out of shelters,” she noted.
Next Steps
Voices of Change presented their expansion plan to Marion County’s Development Review Committee and is currently working on clarifying utility plans for final approval. To fund these new initiatives, the organization is fundraising to reach a $5 million goal.
