Sausages, cheese, and pet travel: What changes might come with the new EU agreement?

The UK and EU are currently negotiating a significant post-Brexit trade deal that aims to reduce checks on imported and exported food and agricultural products. This deal, which will be discussed in upcoming EU summit meetings, could have far-reaching effects on items like sausages, cheese, and more.

Proposed Key Changes:

  1. Elimination of Red Tape: A proposed Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) trade deal could significantly reduce regulatory hurdles for food imports and exports. This includes removing 100% documentary checks on several goods.

  2. Impact on Agriculture: British farmers might regain access to export markets for fresh sausages, burgers, shellfish, and seed potatoes. Currently, many products face stringent checks, but these could be lifted under the new agreement.

  3. Cost Reductions:

    • The deal could eliminate various fees associated with exporting, including:
      • Export Health Certificates (£200 each)
      • Phytosanitary Certificates (£25 each)
      • Organic Certificates of Inspection (around £35)
    • Other expenses, like inspection fees and sampling costs, may also be removed.
  4. Pet Passports: The deal may reinstate multi-use passports for British pets traveling to the EU, replacing the need for separate animal health certificates.

Economic Impact:

The UK government estimates that this deal could contribute up to £5.1 billion a year to the economy, easing the burden on farmers and businesses that have faced challenges since leaving the EU’s single market.

The negotiations are ongoing, with both UK and EU teams working to finalize the terms before the upcoming summit on November 20. Reaching an agreement could signify a shift towards a more cooperative relationship between the UK and the EU, especially under the leadership of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who seeks closer ties with Europe.
