California legislation aims at addressing careless pet boarding establishments following a dog’s tragic viral demise.

In August, an influencer couple’s dog tragically died while at a boarding facility, leading California Congressman James Gallagher to introduce “Dunkin’s Law.” This legislation aims to hold pet care facilities accountable for animal harm or death by expanding the state’s Animal Welfare Act. It defines pets as “sentient beings,” allowing owners to seek damages when their pets are harmed in care.

Gallagher emphasized the need for stronger protections and accountability, particularly after disturbing events, including the uncovering of 117 dead dogs at a Northern California rescue facility. The legislation seeks to prevent such incidents and ensure that no-kill shelters adhere to humane practices.

The couple, whose dog Dunkin died during a heat wave incident, shared their experience on social media, resonating with many others who had faced similar tragedies. Gallagher’s initiative aims to provide justice for pet owners and enhance regulations for animal care facilities.
