Subject: Re: Concerns About My Dog’s Hiccups
Dear L.D.,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns about your new dog. It’s great to hear that she has already formed such a strong bond with you!
Yes, dogs can indeed have hiccups, and they can occur while sleeping. These hiccups are caused by involuntary spasms of the diaphragm and are usually harmless. While they may be more common in young dogs and puppies, they can certainly happen to adult dogs as well.
The triggers for hiccups can vary, often including excitement, rapid breathing, fatigue, or even eating or drinking too quickly. A nervous disposition might contribute to some of these factors, but it’s not directly linked to hiccups.
It’s normal for hiccups to occur only for a few minutes and then resolve on their own. I recommend not waking her if she has hiccups, as this can be startling for her and might affect your growing trust bond.
However, if the hiccups increase in frequency or duration, or if they last longer than an hour, it would be wise to consult a veterinarian for further evaluation. Otherwise, it’s likely just a quirky behavior she’ll grow out of as she matures.
If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to reach out.
Best wishes to you and your new companion!
