Newberry’s Potential Role in Space: Officials May Back NASA’s Lunar Base Project

Newberry City Officials Tour NASA Kennedy Space Center

On October 6, city officials from Newberry visited the NASA Kennedy Space Center, exploring facilities used by astronauts. During the tour, Newberry Mayor Tim Marden shared that NASA was keen to learn about Newberry’s involvement with the Newberry AgTech project, which aims to develop an Industrial Hydroponic Greenhouse (IHG) facility.

The project is overseen by Harvest Singularity, a company focused on agriculture technology and hydroponic greenhouses. CEO Charles Garza highlighted plans to establish ten such facilities across Florida, with Newberry as the first site.

In a Facebook video, Marden mentioned that NASA sought to include insights from the AgTech project in their plans for lunar and Martian colonization efforts. NASA is working towards establishing “humanity’s first lunar outpost” near the Moon’s South Pole.

Marden expressed pride in Newberry’s role in the discussion, stating, “It’s pretty interesting that Newberry has a seat at the table.” City Manager Jordan Marlowe echoed this sentiment, noting the goal of having a colony on the Moon by 2035, emphasizing that Newberry would play a significant part in this vision.

Addressing skeptics, Marlowe pointed out that batteries manufactured in Newberry are currently utilized on the International Space Station. Marden indicated that further details regarding the NASA-Newberry partnership will be revealed soon.
