Commentary by Zackary Jerome Darring
When I think about Carmel, Indiana, I don’t just think about a city — I think about home. Having been a resident here for 33 years and one of the first minority-owned business operators in Carmel, my journey is intricately tied to this remarkable community.
From 2010 to 2016, my business, Zacky’s Hot Dogs and Smokehouse BBQ, transcended the typical restaurant experience to become a beloved gathering spot. Customers often remarked, “This place reminds me of Cheers.”
Before Zacky’s opened, fans of Chicago-style hot dogs had lost their favorite haunt and were searching for a new gathering place. We stepped in and answered that need, serving up authentic Chicago-style hot dogs and our famous Italian Beef sandwiches. To our loyal patrons, my apologies for making you hungry again!
Zacky’s quickly became a cherished name, and we felt honored to regularly serve local heroes from the Carmel Fire and Police Departments, as well as INDOT crews who ensured our roads were safe. These folks were more than customers; they were our neighbors, and feeding them was a privilege.
What I cherish most about Carmel is that it’s where I raised my family. Seeing my children grow up in a community that prioritizes excellence, safety, and togetherness has been one of life’s greatest gifts. Carmel didn’t just support my business; it shaped my children and provided our family with a strong sense of pride and belonging.
As we celebrate this 50th milestone for our city, I am confident that under Mayor Sue Finkam’s leadership, Carmel will continue to thrive as one of the finest places in America to raise a family, pursue dreams, and build businesses that enhance our community.
The best days of Carmel are still ahead of us. Happy 50th, Carmel. You will always hold a special place in my heart — and at my table!
