Tail to Paw Animal Support: A Mission of Compassion and Care
Overview
Tail to Paw Animal Support is a nonprofit organization based in East Haven, Connecticut, founded by Bobbi Jo Evans and her daughter, Kate Williams. The organization was established to ensure that no pet owner has to abandon or surrender their beloved pets due to financial or housing instability.
The Inspiration
The nonprofit was inspired by a tragic incident involving a pet named Smudge, who was cruelly dumped in an oil fire. Despite his injuries, Tail to Paw was able to reunite him with his owner, leading to the founding of the organization with a mission of “No animal left behind. No human left alone.”
What They Do
Tail to Paw assists pet owners by:
- Providing basic medical services, vaccinations, spay/neuter support.
- Offering pet food and essential supplies.
- Educating pet owners on topics like proper care and special needs animals.
- Connecting clients with state resources and other vital services (e.g., SNAP, housing assistance).
Target Populations
The organization often serves veterans, seniors, and those on state disability assistance.
Impact
Since its inception in 2016, Tail to Paw has prevented the abandonment of over 400 pets and supported more than 390 households, emphasizing that they are not a shelter or rescue but rather a support system for pet owners in need.
Client Testimonials
Gary Ardito, a Branford resident who faced challenges after a house fire, expressed gratitude for the organization’s support, stating they provided essential supplies and even helped with veterinary bills for his cat, Princess.
Ongoing Challenges & Support
As living costs rise and social benefits fluctuate, Evans notes that the need for assistance is greater than ever. The organization relies on private donations, grants, and fundraising events to continue its work, including a 10-year anniversary celebration planned for November.
Vision for the Future
Bobbi Jo Evans believes in the importance of the animal-human bond, especially during difficult times. She states, “Our work will never cease until every animal can remain with their owner safely, affordably, and without the threat of abandonment or surrender.”
