Historic Hydrogen-Powered Race Car Arrives at UCLA – Daily News

A hydrogen-powered race car, the JCB Hydromax, recently set a world land-speed record at 406.32 mph and visited UCLA on Friday, October 9, 2026. This event aimed to educate students about hydrogen technology and its potential in clean energy.

Developed by JCB, the 32-foot vehicle features two hydrogen internal combustion engines producing 1,600 bhp, with British pilot Andy Green achieving the record speeds on August 11.

The event, titled “The Hydrogen Frontier: Engineering a Clean Energy Future,” was organized by UCLA’s Samueli School of Engineering and the Semel Healthy Campus Initiatives Center. It brought together students, industry representatives, and organizations focused on hydrogen technology and sustainability.

Participants discussed innovations, such as converting biomass waste into biohydrogen, while also exploring the connections between environmental conditions and public health. After a video presentation and panel discussion, attendees could view the JCB Hydromax and other vehicles on campus.
