Mattel’s New Strategy to Boost Declining Barbie Sales: Water Parks | Entertainment

Mattel is pivoting towards developing water parks to diversify its revenue streams in response to declining Barbie sales. The company, which has faced challenges in turning its toy portfolio into profitable entertainment experiences, plans to open its first Wonder Indoor Waterpark in Bellevue, Nebraska, at the end of 2027. This park will feature attractions like a Barbie activity pool and a Hot Wheels slide tower, with a focus on creating immersive experiences beyond traditional markets.

Despite past setbacks in launching theme parks, Mattel is expanding its plans to include locations in Florida, Illinois, and North Carolina. Under new CEO Roger Lynch, Mattel aims to replicate the success of the 2023 Barbie film, which boosted sales significantly. However, a recent film related to “Masters of the Universe” underperformed. The company reported a net loss in the second quarter, highlighting ongoing struggles amidst mixed toy performance, leading to a dip in investor confidence.
