Daytona Beach businesses face ongoing flooding challenges.

Daytona Beach Faces Flooding Challenges Amid Recent Rainfall

Recent rainfall in Daytona Beach has resulted in street flooding, prompting both business owners and residents to monitor drainage issues closely. The city is actively addressing these concerns by adding pumps and clearing drainage basins.

Ed “Heavy” Kastrul, owner of Midwest Motorcycle on North Beach Street, expressed frustration over the worsening flooding situation, which frequently affects his business. He has resorted to using expandable spray foam to prevent water intrusion. Kastrul explained that runoff drains into the Halifax River, but as the river rises, it can cause backflow into the city: “As the Halifax River rises, so many places are draining into the river… it back feeds.”

Flooding has long impacted local businesses, with Kastrul recalling how he had to close a previous store due to water damage from splashes caused by passing trucks.

In response, Daytona Beach has deployed an emergency bypass pump at the Gardiner Court Pump Station to counter any overwhelming rainfall. This pump will activate if the permanent system proves inadequate. Stephanie Beaver, a nearby resident, indicated her experience with significant flooding, notably during Hurricane Milton. She appreciates the new pump, noting its effectiveness in preventing standing water since its installation.

The city has also placed additional pumps in the Fairway Estates neighborhood and is actively cleaning drainage basins. Volusia County officials stated that public works crews are monitoring potential drainage issues but reported no significant flooding cases thus far.
