Ian Hill Announces Retirement from Judas Priest
Ian Hill, the longtime bassist of the iconic British heavy metal band Judas Priest, has officially announced his retirement after more than five decades with the band. The 74-year-old musician shared the news on Instagram, citing ongoing struggles with arthritis as the main reason for his decision.
In his heartfelt message, Hill expressed that he had always promised to continue performing until his abilities were affected. Unfortunately, he noted, that time has now arrived. The arthritis has progressed to both shoulders and his hands, causing significant pain that he has been managing with various treatments.
Hill has been a core member of Judas Priest since its inception in 1970, contributing to all 19 albums, including their upcoming release. Although he managed to record bass lines for the new album, uncertainties arose regarding his ability to complete recent tours.
To fill Hill’s shoes on the tour, the band has chosen Uriah Heep’s bassist, Davey Rimmer, who previously impressed during a last-minute performance in September. Hill expressed his confidence in Rimmer, calling him a “great bassist” and wishing him all the best.
Reflecting on his career, Hill mentioned a tendon injury in his shoulder and the importance of spending time with his family after years of dedication to the band. Concluding his message, he expressed gratitude for his journey and the support of fans.
In turn, Uriah Heep announced that they will seek a replacement for Rimmer as he takes on this new role with Judas Priest, wishing him success in this coveted position within the heavy metal community.
