Overview
The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Hera mission, which launched on October 7, 2024, is now making critical preparations for its approach to target asteroids. This spacecraft, about the size of a small car, has been journeying through space for two years and is gearing up for essential braking maneuvers.

Key Developments

  • Launch Details
Hera launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, just before Hurricane Milton. The mission has involved several deep-space maneuvers, including a significant flyby of Mars in spring 2025, helping to adjust its trajectory and speed. Hera is currently traveling at over 12 kilometers per second, approaching the Didymos binary asteroids.

  • Upcoming Braking Maneuvers
On October 15, Hera will employ its Orbit Control Thrusters to decelerate by a few hundred meters per second, preparing to match the velocities of the Didymos system. This braking maneuver will take about 93 minutes.

  • Technical Challenges
This complex maneuver requires careful coordination of Hera’s thrusters to maintain its trajectory and attitude. ESA’s Flight Dynamics team has designed a sequence of commands to ensure precise execution.

  • Signal Acquisition
Following the braking maneuver, the mission team will use ESA’s deep-space antennas in New Norcia, Australia, to receive data and verify performance. This involves assessing the braking effect on Hera’s velocity and trajectory.

  • Future Maneuvers
A second shorter braking maneuver is scheduled for October 22, which will finalize the velocity adjustments necessary for Hera to approach Didymos. Further smaller maneuvers will occur later to reduce Hera’s relative velocity to near zero.

Key Objectives

Hera aims to investigate Dimorphos, the first Solar System body altered by human activity due to NASA’s DART spacecraft impact in 2022. This mission will gather critical data about the asteroid’s structure and response to the impact, fostering advancements in planetary defense strategies.
