It’s time to jam out like it’s 2001! Britney Spears dropped the track “She’ll Never Be Me,” which was meant for her third studio album, Britney. The release coincides with her upcoming anniversary edition of the album.
The song’s unveiling comes from Spears’ official Facebook page, which hinted at additional surprises leading up to the album’s release. Timberlake has collaborated with her before, contributing to “What It’s Like to Be Me” from the same album.
Spears and Timberlake met on The Mickey Mouse Club set in 1992 and dated from 1999 to 2002. Sharing her nerves about working with him, Spears recounted, “I said, ‘Britney, just do the vocals, don’t be nervous’ … but it ended up being fine, actually.”
Their split led to some public tensions, highlighted by Timberlake’s music video for “Cry Me a River,” featuring a Spears lookalike. He wrote about the song’s emotional genesis in his memoir.
Conversely, in her memoir The Woman in Me, Spears expressed feeling sidelined after their breakup, implying Timberlake’s influence on public perception.
“She’ll Never Be Me” is now available on streaming platforms, with the anniversary edition of Britney to be released on November 6.
