DOH announces eighth travel-related dengue fever case in Hawaii for 2026 | News

The Hawaii Department of Health has reported the eighth travel-related case of dengue fever for the year. This particular case involved an individual returning to Oahu from a region where dengue is endemic. Fortunately, the risk of local transmission is considered low due to the circumstances of this case.

In response, DOH teams are inspecting mosquito control activities in the affected area. Community members are encouraged to take preventive measures, particularly by removing standing water that can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Common sources of standing water include containers, plant holders, rain barrels, and cups left outdoors.

Dengue fever is prevalent in various tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including parts of Central and South America, Asia, the Middle East, and several Pacific Islands. Travelers are advised to review travel health information and precautions about dengue risks at least a month before their trips, particularly in areas known for higher mosquito activity.
